Want to know more about what this online course is all about?
One of the methods presented in the course is the Thanheiser Trauma Therapy (TTT) for horses – a special method developed by me to relax horses and to release deep stress caused by traumatic experiences, e.g. after accidents or difficult experiences with people.
Only a calm mind can listen and grow. Horses are flight animals and mammals. This makes them as predestined as we are to accumulate stress, especially because we keep them in an environment that is actually unnatural for them and full of stimuli. The nervous system is comparable to a barrel of water, when it is full, one drop is enough and it overflows – then the horse explodes because of something small.
Skittish horses have a low capacity to process stress because their barrel is already full to the brim. Others protect their integrity by switching off mentally and, completely resigned, hardly react to environmental stimuli anymore. Both are different symptoms of an overloaded nervous system.
It is therefore important that the stress stimuli absorbed by the nervous system are also released again so that the biochemical energy provided by the body for flight (or, in the case of horses, attack in an emergency) are released again. I have developed the TTT method for this purpose.
If this does not happen and the horse’s relaxation response is disturbed (or has been disturbed in the past, for example through impatience, harsh punishment or traumatic experiences), more and more stress accumulates in the nervous system. As mentioned above, this results in excessive nervousness, aggression, resignation, dissociation (lack of body awareness) and other behavioral abnormalities.
In my online course, I will show you how you can reconnect your horse’s unfinished relaxation reactions and what you need to pay attention to in future. I will help you to find the triggers (if you know them, how to interpret your horse’s behavior and body language and also how to avoid stress accumulation in the future.
Another method I will introduce to you in the course is how you can use TTT for gentle but sustainable resilience training.
This is a little less about releasing old, held stress and more about integrating new experiences, stimuli and dealing with scary objects. Unlike “desensitization”, which is unfortunately often seen, where horses are deliberately dulled to an object, we focus on the subtle stimulus processing of the horse. If you have worked well, you will be rewarded at the end of the session with a horse that is more adaptable, courageous and open-minded because it has been given the necessary time to process stimuli at its own pace, gradually becoming a reliable partner for you.
Another method I would like to introduce to you in the course is positive reinforcement with food reward – here without a clicker.
This method, which is rightly becoming more and more widespread, should not be missing from any calmness training program, because it brings you quick results and horses enjoy it a lot! You will see that food reward does not necessarily mean that your horses will become beggars or biters and how quickly you can achieve great results if you use it correctly! Of course, we can then discuss in the forum which of these methods makes sense for your specific issue with your horse and why.
As a useful extra, I have also made a video of the practical application of a special voice signal. I use this to maintain the trust of my horses even in unpleasant situations (e.g. veterinary examinations).
